What is Micro-Cheating?

These behaviors are not as blatant as full-blown cheating but are indicative of emotional or physical interest in someone outside the relationship. Examples of micro-cheating are as follows;
1. Sharing Personal Details:
When a man/woman confides his/her problems, talks negatively about his/her partner to the opposite sex, it is a clear indication of micro-cheating. This could involve sharing problems, fears, or intimate thoughts with someone who is not part of the relationship. The relationship should be between the man and the woman. It is not between a man, woman and his female/male friends. It is one thing if the person is seeking a one-time advice. However, it is entirely different if the person has made a habit of seeking comfort with the opposite sex at the expense of his partners’ credibility.
Efrain has a relationship with Maria. At times when Maria points out to Efrain her gut feeling about Efrain's flirtations and closeness to Yohanna. It was a concern that Maria discussed solely with Efrain. Hence, when Yohanna had been deliberately giving hints to Maria that she is aware of the conversations that she had with her boyfriend, she is gradually able to connect the dots. Those hints gave way that Efrain had been confiding to Yohanna about the conversations that should have had stayed within the confines of the relationship.
2. Emotional Investment:
Developing a deep emotional connection or attachment to someone outside the relationship, such as spending significant time discussing personal matters or seeking emotional support from them. This could be through conversations, online chats, or in-person meetings that have an emotional depth beyond mere friendship.
Maria can see that Efrain seemed to have been too emotionally invested in Yohanna. To test Efrain's loyalty, Maria requested him to not communicate first. Let Yohanna make the first move. Regretfully, Yohanna did not make a first move. Hence, Efrain has been repeatedly asking Maria to allow him to talk to Yohanna. It has become a constant request, even at night when they are about to go to bed. Maria consented to Efrain to be the first one to speak to Yohanna, provided he informs her once they are already chatting again. A few days later, Yohanna told Maria that she and Efrain chatted, but Efrain did not keep his promise to inform Maria. When Maria asked Efrain, he shrugged and said he forgot.
On another day, Maria sent an SMS message to Efrain at 1:00 pm. She is waiting for a response from Efrain. However, her work shift ended, and had reached home with no response from Efrain. At 5:00 pm on the same day, the group chat flashed a message from Yohanna, asking a question. In less than one minute, Efrain answered Yohanna's query in the chat box. Efrain's tone is upbeat, with his ecstatic tone on their exchange over the chat box. Maria asked herself, how come I sent Efrain an SMS message 4 hours ago, with no response. However, when it was Yohanna who sent a message in the group chat, Efrain responded in less than 1 minute? Efrain only responded to Maria when she sent a direct message asking why he is unable to respond to her SMS. Efrain said he has been very busy and had been on the road the whole day. Frankly, it is okay with Maria if Efrain is unable to answer because he is really very busy. However, if he is that busy, why was he able to respond to Yohanna in a matter of seconds? Just like their previous encounter, Efrain spoke as if Maria is making small matters a big deal. He spoke as if Maria's concern are trivial and unimportant. The next day, Maria learned from Yohanna that they were already privately chatting even before Yohanna sent her query on the group chat.
On another instance, Maria and Yohanna does not have a means to commute. Efrain opted to drop Yohanna off to a location where she can already get a cab home. The route is out of Maria's way home. In the end, Maria would have to commute and it is Yohanna that Efrain will drop off to a location where she can easily find a means to commute. Maria asked Efrain why can't he drop off to a location where both she and Yohanna can find a cab to go home. Efrain became upset and in the heat of the moment, said that if he cannot drop Yohanna off, might as well that he will not assist anyone. Maria did not bother to argue anymore. On that day when Maria and Yohanna had to commute, Maria saw Yohanna on her phone. She jokingly said "What did Efrain said?" Yohanna blushed, unable to speak. Maria had the gut feeling that it was Efrain she was chatting with, but then, it was just a gut feeling. However, the reaction of Yohanna confirmed Maria's gut feeling. There were no need for words to confirm her gut feeling, it is written all over Yohanna’s face. That same day, Maria had an accident on her way home. After the accident, Efrain stated that he should have dropped both of them off to a place where both Maria and Yohanna can already find a cab home. Efrain's statement was not a consolation for Maria. It was one of those instances when Maria felt how devalued she is.
3. Social Media Activity:
Maintaining or engaging in secretive interactions on social media, such as liking or commenting on posts of an ex-partner or someone the partner doesn’t know. This can also include privately following or messaging individuals with whom one’s partner is unaware of.
Maria read a comment made by Efrain to Marisols’ post on her selfie picture. Efrains’ comment was “I love you cobber”. Maria knew Marisol only in social media because she is consistent in her heart reaction to all of Efrain’s pictures. Efrain said it is already a practice for him to say I love you to everyone, and he also admitted that the same woman has a crush on him. Maria has an unspoken question, “Why say I Love you to a woman whom you know has a strong romantic interest for you?” But then, the post was a few months before she met Efrain. So, she tried to ignore it. It took time, sometimes she went back to the same picture and read numerous times her boyfriend's comment to Marisol. Every time she read her boyfriend's "I love you" to another woman, there was a thud in her heart, a stabbing pain. It took an effort for Maria to ignore Efrain's "I love you" to another woman, but what she cannot ignore is the fact that she is the girlfriend, but in the entire time that they were in a relationship, Efrain seemed to be hesitant to make his other friends know that he is connected with Maria. He is more receptive to lady friends, like reacting to almost all of the posts of Paz, declaring “I love you” to Marisol, but would not even allow a hint that he is connected to Maria over social media.
Imagine yourself in Maria's shoe, your boyfriend declared "I love you" to another woman over the world wide web, but cannot even allow a hint to his social media friends that he is connected to you, how will that make you feel? Are you going to feel secured in your relationship?
4. Flirty Behavior in Public.
Displaying flirtatious behavior or engaging in suggestive conversations with someone outside the relationship in social or public setting. This might include playful teasing or lingering touches that could be perceived as romantic.
Efrain and Yohanna would consistently share a good laugh, with subtle flirtations. Every time Maria wants to join in with the conversation, Efrain will shun her and will swiftly turn his attention to Yohanna. When Maria brought it up to Efrain, his response was that Marias’ concern was trivial and unimportant.
On another instance, Maria was with Efrain when they picked up Ana on her way to work. On the sight of Ana, Efrain's face lightened up. He was like a kid who saw a candy, his expression giddy, his smile ear to ear. Maria was sitting next to Efrain. As soon as Ana were inside the vehicle, Ana blurted "You really look good, I missed you". Maria could see on her peripheral vision as Ana's fingers flirtatiously navigates Efrain's neck up to his ears. Efrain and Ana laughing as Efrain drove, with Maria unable to speak. Ana did not know that Efrain and Maria had a relationship at the time, so it was the excuse that Efrain used to validate such disrespect. There was no effort to avoid Ana's advances, even in front of Maria. There was no pretentions that he is not enjoying the flirtations, even in front of Maria.
